The Importance of Correct Meat Storage

By December 21, 2016News

When storing meat, the correct temperature is the key to keeping it just right. To make sure your food is safe to eat, the correct storage method is a must-know within business, or simply at home.

Temperature

Refrigeration is important in general for storage of food as it slows bacterial growth, which exists everywhere naturally. Bacteria is in soil, water, air and the food we eat. Bacteria grow quickest in temperatures between 40 and 140 °F which is classed as the ‘danger zone’ although a refrigerator set at 40 °F or below will protect most foods.

Separation of Meat

Raw meat, poultry or any seafood should be in a sealed container or securely wrapped up. This prevents any raw juices from contaminating any other food or products. Some fridges have special adjustable shelves or an individual meat draw, which make storage of meat more convenient. This also makes storage of other foods such as fruit and vegetables and cheese much more convenient as it separated the variations of products.

An adjustable temperature meat draw can maximise the storage time and provide additional cool air in a direct way, without freezing. Large portions of meat should be divided into smaller parts before refrigerating.

Keeping the Fridge Clean

As well as storing your meat at the correct temperature. The other parts of the surroundings need to be top quality also. The correct fridge needs to be used for storing the right products as well as keeping it as clean as possible. Once a week, at least, try to throw out perishable foods. A general rule to keep to, is for cooked leftovers to a max of 4 days and 1 to 2 days for raw poultry and ground meats. A great idea to keep your fridge fresh is to keep an open box of baking soda on a shelf.
